We often hear about journalists who work for news organizations losing their jobs due to layoffs and cuts. A challenging media environment unfortunately makes these types of job losses far too common. But what about journalists who don’t work for a single employer but instead work for multiple organizations on a job-by-joy basis? What are their chances of finding work?
Some members of the National Press Club are freelance journalists. As a matter of fact, the club even has a freelance committee that allows team members the chance to gather once a month to discuss their situations. We decided to talk to one of the co-chairs of that committee, Andrea Murad, about life as a freelance journalist in 2025.
She has had a lot of success as a freelancer, and in this edition of Update-1 she discusses how she became a freelance journalist, what she has learned and how she helps others in an increasingly competitive market. Murad also talks about the rise of artificial intelligence and the realities of making a living as a freelancer.
